Netflix. The one word that depicts what many students, including myself, accomplished this summer. I am one to admit that I spent nearly the entire summer binge watching old and new T.V. shows and movies. The most talked about show this summer was “Orange is the New Black” starring Taylor Schilling. “Orange is the New Black” tells the story of an engaged woman, Piper Chapman, who is sentenced to 15 months in a women’s federal prison. The show’s comedic content made me laugh until I cried. I also spent large amounts of time watching “Heroes,” the story about people of different backgrounds and history coming together to accept the extraordinary abilities they all possess. The show ran from 2006 to 2010 with only four seasons, but a reboot is in progress. “Heroes Reborn” will premiere in 2015. Another popular show many students watched this summer was BBC’s “Doctor Who.” For years, I judged the show, but I didn’t know what I was missing until I took the time to sit down and make it through one episode. I discovered that people either love it or hate it. I rather enjoyed it and found the tenth doctor portrayed by David Tennant to be my favorite. “Doctor Who” is the story of a Time Lord known as “The Doctor” who travels through time and space in his spaceship called the TARDIS, which stands for “Time And Relative Dimension In Space”. A new season starring Peter Capaldi as the twelfth doctor premiered on Saturday, August 23rd, almost a year after the season finale starring Matt Smith as the eleventh doctor. As stated by Justine Figueroa, “I think Peter Capaldi will make a great doctor. He’s definitely taken the character and made it his own. He’s not the touchy-feely type of guy. He’s pretty serious, but that's not a bad thing. I think with Peter Capaldi as the twelfth doctor, he’s probably going to be tougher than ever before. So yes, I think he’s going to live up to the fans’ expectations just fine. Plus, I love the costume!” Although there were many interesting shows to watch on Netflix , there were also some fantastic summer blockbusters that people enjoyed. “Lucy” starring Scarlett Johansson tells the story of a woman who accesses more than ten percent of her brain and the consequences that follow her actions. Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” became 2014’s top-grossing movie. It is an action packed space adventure about a team of misfits who desperately save the galaxy after it is put in jeopardy. The most talked about scene of the movie was during the credits, which showed baby Groot, a tree-like humanoid, dancing to “I Want You Back.” Who doesn’t love a good Jackson 5 song? "X Men: Days of Future Past" also made its way on to list. The A- list cast won the hearts of fans. Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) has one chance to change the past to prevent the extinction of mutants and humans alike. Not only does he return to the 70’s, but he teams up with Professor X (James McAvoy), a mind reader, and Magneto (Michael Fassbender), a metal bending villain. Will he save both races or will he fail his mission? The movie also features Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique and special guest star Evan Peters as the super speeding mutant, Quicksilver. The original cast also made an appearance. I think people absolutely loved this movie because it took the meaning of “action- packed” to the next level. With options for every type of mood Netflix continues to entertain students from summer into the school year!
