The Art of Cap Decorating

The impending graduation day has taken over both high school and college campuses across the United States. It’s a time when young adults start to spread their wings and venture out into the college world or real world. We may feel stressed out, excited, or feel like we’re losing control as the graduation date comes closer, but there is one thing we do have control over: fashion. The structured look of a cap with tassel and traditional graduation gown keeps a sense of uniformity and organization for the graduates throughout the ceremony. But most kids want to find different ways to express their individuality and creativity. I know those caps and gowns aren’t exactly fashion show ready but there is definitely a way to make that square piece of cardboard on your head your own. There are a multitude of ways to decorate a cap. The possibilities are endless. Some common decorating ideas are:

  • use quotes and phrases

  • get into your favorite character or disney theme

  • be yourself and create something that’s all about you

  • go big or go home with the materials and decorating

  • send a shoutout or message

  • use or bring back something from your childhood

Decorating graduation caps has become increasingly popular over the last few years. Back in the day, cap decorating was forbidden, but eventually school became a little more flexible and started to allow graduates to “bling out” their caps. Caps can express messages of celebration, thanks to parents, and shout outs to schools/professions the students are planning to attend or have. It’s also a great way to get in touch with your inner-Picasso or spend time with friends you’ll soon depart from. Just have fun with it, whether it be decorating with close friends, your family, or using the sparkliest thing you can find. It’s all about YOU!
