“Be informed. Be involved. Be inspired.” states sponsor Mrs. Stacey, quoting the Model UN slogan. Model United Nations or Model UN is an extracurricular activity offered at Mascoutah where students represent different countries while trying to pass resolutions with their adversaries to solve global problems. Students learn valuable life skills such as working and negotiating calmly with others, understanding existing problems in today’s world, and dealing with concerns of their peers. “I’ve learned a lot through Model UN that I’ll be able to use in real life situations,” says senior, Nick Patterline. At the Mckendree Conference in the fall and spring, students compete against other schools in the area like Belleville East and West, Freeburg, Highland, and many more. Students debate issues about political, legal, and social issues among others. “Students get really involved in our debates, especially at conferences. It seems to really excite them,” says co-sponsor Mrs. Link, “I hope that the students take what they have learned and apply it to life after high school.”
