Super Bowl XLIX

“This year’s Super Bowl is going to be a good one,” said Caleb Ridgley, a sophomore at Mascoutah High School. Between Katy Perry’s breathtaking halftime performance and, of course, the football, it seems as though Caleb’’s prediction was correct.
With the final outcome 28-24, in the New England Patriots favor, nobody can say that the game was a blowout. Each team played their hardest, but it was the Patriots who walked away with the trophy.
The brawl between the two teams that took place with under 30 seconds left in the game was almost as entertaining as Katy Perry’s halftime show, according to some viewers on Twitter. “That was insane,” one user stated, shortly after the referees broke up the fight and ejected one of the Seattle Seahawks players.
As for the halftime show, Katy Perry brought the crazy outfits and props that she is known for, as well as two special guests. Missy Elliott, Lenny Kravitz, a robotic lion, dancing sharks, and fireworks were only some of what Perry brought to the show as her medley of chart-topping songs distracted viewers from the tension in the stadium.
With the first Super Bowl taking place on January 15, 1967, the broadcast is still going strong as the most watched annual program in the United States. Super Bowl parties are among the many traditions upheld by superfans and vaguely interested viewers alike.
While many fans watch the game with a fiery passion, the majority of people attend Super Bowl watch parties for the food. “I’m probably more excited for the food than for the game,” says Mascoutah senior Alyson Meermans. She is not alone. An estimated 9 million pounds of guacamole were consumed on Super Bowl Sunday with the amount of chicken wings following close behind.
Super Bowl parties have long been a tradition for football fans. Not only is it the second-largest day of food consumption in the United States (behind Thanksgiving), but several commentators have referred to Super Bowl Sunday as an unofficial holiday due to the way it brings family and friends together.
Overall, Super Bowl 49 did not disappoint. The game was intense, the halftime show was enjoyable, and great food was eaten by all.
