Suitecase Murder

Maya Everts

After spotted by security cameras rolling a suitcase that contained dismembered body parts in San Francisco, Mark Andrus, 59, was arrested for suspicion of murder.

Authorities released surveillance photos on Friday, January 30th, which lead to an anonymous tip revealing that the man was staying at an apartment building less than a mile from where the suitcase was found.

Andrus spent five days in jail, until the San Francisco district attorney determined that there was not enough evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. The suspect was released Tuesday, February 3rd around 9 p.m.

Additionally, the dismembered man was missing a head, both hands, and both lower arms.

“Investigators later found additional dismembered remains in a trash can nearby,” police said.

As a result, San Francisco police are searching the area for more evidence.

“We want to make sure we thoroughly scour the area to make sure there’s no other parts we may have missed,” SFPD Spokesperson, Officer Albie Esparza said.

Although the police have a person of interest, the case is far from cracked.

“We are trying to determine what happened and was this body dumped,” said Esparza. “Did it happen nearby? Did it happen in San Francisco?”

The dismembered man remains unidentified, as the State Bureau of Forensic Services’ DNA laboratory will be needed to identify the body.
