10 Reasons Why I Love Valentine's Day

Kalli Morris

Valentine’s Day is a date that either brings grimaces or utter joy. For most they see it as a invalidated and made up event; when in reality it is a holiday that deserves that type of celebration! Valentine's Day provides an opportunity to express one’s love for another, or even just bask in the love that others are feeling. We feel the urge to shower our loved ones with cards, gifts and flowers all objects that symbolize love. While love does not need to be limited to those gifts sometimes just the reminder is nice. Here are ten of the reasons why I love Valentine’s Day!

1. It is an excuse to watch every romantic movie ever made. Who could refuse a movie marathon including the classics like Sleepless in Seattle or The Notebook? Now to some that may be a regular Saturday evening, but this is special because it gets you in the right mindset for Valentine’s Day. And men, although you may say this is would be considered a negative this gives you the opportunity to watch fantastic movies your macho selves would not go out to see, and let’s be honest you like them deep down.

2. Alternative to romance movies. Now 'Lovey Dovey' movies aren't for some, but that does not mean you need to shun Valentine's Day or the opportunity to watch great motion pictures. If the romantic comedy is not up your alley I have just the thing that brings you joy and sadness all wrapped into one..Russian love stories. Three words that will change you forever because these are just what you have been missing all of your life. Movies that would fall under these categories are always star crossed lovers who although they are destined to be together just never overcome their circumstances and of course, they all take place in Russia. Now that may seem morbid to some to sit and watch these sad movies, but speaking from experience it is quite enjoyable, and demonstrates that not all love stories have happy endings. (AKA you on Valentine's Day alone watching these movies). some of my personal favorites Anna Karenina, the high society woman who falls for the troubling military figure or even Dr. Zhivagothe epitome of bad timing. So the next time you want to be reminded that it could always be worse just grab a big bowl of popcorn and tune into these fine classics.

3. CHOCOLATE GALORE. Just those two words and you have my attention. Chocolate is the language of love. And this is a language you can actually eat and enjoy; where words lack meaning chocolate can substitute. And we all know all chocolate tastes 10Xs better when it’s in the shape of a giant heart. While some may not receive them as gifts who says you can't still take advantage of these quality chocolates? If you're like me you’ll be waiting for the February 15 clearance sale.

4. That brings me to another point, marked down delicious treats. Okay so you don't have a doting boyfriend to buy you chocolates in giant hearts, bouquets of flowers, or giant stuffed animals...may I remind you all products go on sale after this glorious day and it’s open season. Eat your heart out on all the things you wished for! This gives you the perfect opportunity to tell that crazy Aunt Sally and your grandmother to get off your back because although you may not have a boyfriend someone obviously cared enough to gift you those presents...who cares that, that person was really you? What they don't know won't hurt them, plus this will make family holidays way less painful.

5. Flowers are in full bloom in February, an occurrence that is not typical in the middle of winter. Seeing the array of bright beautiful roses and carnations is a welcomed gift that for a quick, moment remind us that we are worthy of flowers and also that spring is on the way. While flowers are all over companies have even evolved to create chocolate covered fruit bouquets. So if you're not into the flowers they have sweeter, and edible, options.

6. Conversation hearts, those candy shaped hearts with sayings like "Call Me" "Be my Sweetheart," and "Marry Me," all reasonable inquiries on this fantastic holiday. Once you get past the chalky taste these are essential to having a great holiday. Just like the name says, it’s a great conversation starter. These can be used when you just don't have the courage to tell that boy you're crushing on you want him to be your 'puppy love.' Now just a warning but some people may not respond well to 'I'm in love' or 'party time' but all are good fun and something that can spark a special moment with that person you've been dying to start a conversation with!

7. While the occasional stuffed animal is a welcomed present it takes a whole new meaning around Valentine’s Day. The plethora of animals that are decorated with hearts and romantic sayings, somehow make you believe you actually do need a life size pink gorilla to fulfill your hopes and dreams.

8. Now Valentine’s Day cards may be a little more elementary school party, but I can fondly remember the process that went into decorating my special box that my classmates would place Valentine’s inside of. I got to specifically pick out who got my special valentine, a tradition I wished carried into high school. No joy is comparable to that of opening the box and seeing all of the cards your fellow classmates picked out especially for you. While we may have outgrown the folded movie themed Valentine’s Day cards we still get to enjoy the funny, the heartfelt and the tragic ones Hallmark has to offer.

9. Another reason to celebrate? Hello who doesn't love a good reason to have a party? A day to tell the people you love sounds like a perfect reason to have a good time. Whether you watch movies go out or celebrate being alone it provides an excuse to wake up excited!

10. EVERYONE’S HAPPY. Valentine’s Day is a love fest. Everyone has the opportunity to make the most out of this day by sharing love with their significant other or just friends or family. You get wrapped up in the love being shared, so how could you possibly not like this day? You witness couples showing their love through gifts, but hopefully not in the hallway with insane amounts of PDA.

So for this Valentine’s Day I hope you bask in the glory of love and enjoy everything this holiday has to offer!
