Zayn Changes Directions
For some, March 25 was just another normal Wednesday. But, for millions of girls around the globe, it might as well have been the end. Last Wednesday, Zayn Malik decided to leave One Direction. The 22 year-old cited stress as the reason for leaving, but he is also expected to pursue a solo career.
Malik released an official statement about his departure on Wednesday. It read: “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I'd like to apologise to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”
After being seen at a recording studio this past weekend, speculations arose that he had already begun a solo project. For the past year he has been collaborating with Naughty Boy, a music producer who has previously worked with Sam Smith. Last year, Naughty Boy had said that he was really impressed with Zayn’s writing style and his talent.
Although the remaining four members of One Direction- Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Harry Styles- will continue as a four-piece, fans are still devastated. Will the band be the same? Are they going to last? Will someone else leave? These are the questions fans are asking themselves. Last week, more than 220 employees called their bosses and asked for compassionate leave- an excused absence because of an emergency or death in the family. Employment law lawyers denied the request saying the employees should take a holiday, but not compassionate leave. One MHS junior says, “I have to admit, I cried a little.” Another confesses, “It hasn’t really hit me yet. I’ll probably start crying randomly in one of my classes.”
But, what really matters is that Zayn is happy, healthy, and doing what he needs to do to be himself.
